HOW TO LEAD A SPG DISCIPLESHIP GROUP
Purpose Statement
: The purpose of this session is to communicate the purpose and elements of a Christian discipleship group in order to motivate and equip you to lead an SPG discipleship Group.
Learning Objectives
: This session is designed to help you:
1. Understand how building disciples in a small group is related to the goal of reaching your target area/audience.
2. Understand your role as a leader to create a proper environment for your discipleship group.
3. Understand the role of various elements in a discipleship group and how to utilize them in a discipleship ministry.
4. Lead the first meeting of your small group effectively.

INTRODUCTION
What was the purpose of Jesus' discipleship group?
I. THE PURPOSE OF A DISCIPLESHIP GROUP
The discipleship group is not an end in itself but a tool to help us accomplish the dual focus of the Great Commission.
A. To build spiritual multipliers.
The Great Commission includes the task of teaching people to observe all that Christ commanded.
B. To reach your target area/audience.
The Great Commission also includes the command to make disciples of all
nations (including in sports).
II. THE ROLE OF THE GROUP LEADER
What is the role of a small group leader?
He/She teaches the Word and nurtures a small group of believers to maturity in the faith
III. UNDERSTANDING AND UTILIZING THE ELEMENTS OF THE DISCIPLESHIP GROUP
What should every small group meeting include, and why?
A. Sharing.
B. Prayer and Praise.
C. Session content (discussion).
D. Vision building.
E. Training.
F. One-to-one nurturing
G. Personal relationships.
IV. LEADING THE FIRST MEETING OF YOUR SPG DISCIPLESHIP GROUP
A. The purpose of the first meeting. Explain Matt. 28:19-20
B. The format of the first meeting. Informal.
V. PITFALLS TO LEADING AN EFFECTIVE SMALL GROUP--DANGERS OF OMITTING THE ELEMENTS DISCUSSED IN THIS MESSAGE

A. The small group is the best means for building spiritual multipliers and
reaching a target audience.
B. The group leader must provide an atmosphere of love and accountability.
C. The small group should include the elements of sharing, prayer, vision,
Bible study, training and one on one personal time.
